So in August I sorted the weekly chores of cleaning sinks, toilets, floors, dusting, etc into manageable chunks. Each activity that took 15 minutes or less were given to a specific day of the week. I found that I could get a majority of our weekly cleaning done if we all worked for 15 minutes each day. (that meant nearly an hours worth of work done in 15 minutes!)
Here's how it played out:
Monday
wipedown kitchen cabinets, top of stove and fridge
wash sheets (three week rotation)
trim all the fingernails and toes in the house (dog included)
Tuesday
both toilets
water flowers
dust moms room
Wednesday
both sinks
dust kids' bedrooms
sweep library and school room
Thursday
mop kitchen
vacuum bedrooms
clean mirrors
dust den
Friday
garbage around house
vacuum den
mop bathrooms
Each morning after Lectio Divina or Mass I would offer the chores of the day and each person could take one. We would set the timer for 15 minutes and try to beat the timer with still keeping an eye toward excellence at our work. ( I must admit I tried another system last year of tags that the children could wear to remind them of their chores. I wasn't able to make this work for us.)
I've also added lunch duty to this chore chart. Each day a child has responsibility for making lunch. This means that some days we eat very gooey pb and j! But it has helped each child to learn a variety of cooking options. And takes a little of the jobs of my shoulders. We have continued to use this system even with school "on break".
