Geography made fun.

We incorporate Geography into many of our other subjects. But I realize that we make it so much more fun than just looking at maps.

Here are four of the ways we make it FUN!

We keep a collection of sand from travels (our own collections and friends that are kind enough to bring dirt/sand back for us on their excursions).

You can see that we don't have any kind of organization about the sand right now. Some are in empty water bottles, others in repurposed jelly jars, and still some in urine specimen cups!

The girls made a coding for the US samples with a US map. Otherwise the "foreign soil" samples need to use more detective style learning.

Another form of learning geography the "fun way" is with postcards.

I keep a huge stack of postcards from friends' visits abroad. One geography prompt says "pull out a postcard and find the place on the map". Easy does it. (We don't have a postcard from Antarctica, yet. Would you pick one up on your next visit?)

We do own the Montessori puzzle maps and they get a lot of use.

On our last trips to Florida I bought a child's US road Atlas. It's been great to carry on our trips and highlight the paths we take.
